After moving to their farm with their two boys in 1995 and trying their hand at a few different crops including New Mexican type chillies, Aard and Eve Brink obtained Organic Certification in 1998 to fill a niche in organic chilli products. To achieve a healthy and tasty crop, it soon became clear that soil fertility was the key to success and since 1998, a soil testing and maintenance program has been in place following the Albrecht method of soil mineral balancing. In 1999, their emphasis turned to growing stringless beans, mainly for the Perth market, and since they started trading at the Albany Farmers Market, their little home garden has evolved into a true organic market garden with a small winter range of vegetables like broccoli, cabbage and leeks, and a growing summer range including chillies, beans, beetroot, lettuces, zucchinis, cucumbers, rocket, parsley, basil, eggplant, capsicum and tomatoes (also used in their "Clearly Organic" pasta sauce). Bathgate Farm is a family business developed by Andrew and Jocelyn Bathgate. It is located near Albany on the south coast of Western Australia. We grow potatoes, vegetable and salad crops for sale at the Albany Farmers Market and to selected local restaurants and retailers. Our interest is growing food that we like to eat using a practical but environmently healthy approach. Many of the varieties we grow are unconventional and have been selected for their flavour and cooking qualities. Our passion is to share our experience in producing and preparing fresh produce. We also grow seed potatoes which we supply to the nursery industry.

Denmark Apples

Bill and Julie Lax grow luscious tree ripened, sweet, crunchy apples to tempt taste buds through autumn and winter. Royal Gala, Jonagold, Splendor, Braeburn, Fuji and Pink Lady are just a few of the thirteen varieties grown. Citrus fruit is available in late winter and spring, and other fruits are available as seasonal conditions dictate. Denmark Apple farm is situated in the Scotsdale Valley, Denmark, and is a small family-run operation without large machinery and huge infrastructure. Their army of ducks and guinea fowl forage insects during daylight hours keeping bug numbers low. They manage the orchard using minimum sprays, as they too have to live and work in the environment with their fruit trees.

Damaris Waschk and her partner, Robert Underwood, have run their nursery, landcare consulting and tree planting business since 1989. Damaris looks after the nursery, while Rob’s work takes him all over the region. Damaris started growing herbs some years ago using compost-based potting mixes. The herbs are grown outside and no sprays have been used.

King River Avocados is one of the first avocado orchards established in the Albany region. Located in the Millbrook Valley, 18 km. from Albany, the trees grow on heavy red river loam soils. Simon and Sue Keast, having completed variety research, now concentrate on late varieties – Reed and Hass. The climate of cool long-growing conditions with harvest in late summer allows these avocados to develop dense and strongly flavoured flesh. The growers strive for good quality, unblemished fruit using a system of insecticide-free production. The orchard is small – approx 150 trees ranging from 30-year-old trees to recent plantings in 2004. The Albany Farmers Market has become the sole source of direct sale for King River Avocados.

Ron and Sue Watkins operate their 552 hectare (1364 acre), third-generation family farm, Payneham Vale, in Frankland in Western Australia's wool belt. Their diverse on-farm enterprises include sheep, cattle, broadacre crops, olives, poultry and vegetables, and they recently sold their first harvest of yabbies. The farm was certified organic in the late 1990s. Ron runs a sustainable farming consultancy, which advises some 60 clients. He was instrumental in forming and running the Land Management Society of Western Australia and has received numerous international and national awards for his innovative work in the sustainable agriculture sector.

Steve and Ann are a husband and wife team who started their honey business in 1997. After the downturn in the wool and sheep industries, they decided to diversify into honey production, olives and free-range eggs. They have a property at Boxwood Hill (103km. east of Albany), and a small property 12km. west of Albany. At Boxwood Hill, they have a substantial amount of virgin bush, which enables them to produce honey of the highest possible quality. The ranges of floral sources are mallee, eucalyptus and yate in the east, and jarrah, marri, karri and taylorina, closer to Albany. All the honey they market is sourced entirely from their own production. Their honey is not blended and is handled as little as possible. What the bees put in the hives is what ends up in the jar! We believe this ensures the top quality and purity of our Honey.

After thirty years of developing a farm from the bush east of Jerramungup, Jim and Augusta Saunders settled in greener pastures, west of Redmond. With eldest son John, his wife Toni-Louise and daughter Maria-Louise they are now taking the family farming business in a new direction. In December 2007 they saw the advertisement for the Kervella Cheese sale. Gabrielle Kervella had decided to quit after over 20 years pioneering goats’ cheese production in Australia. Unable to resist this opportunity they bought and moved the goats; relocated the equipment and took apart the cheeserie which they have rebuilt on their property. Gabrielle and Alan taught John and Toni how to make their cheese and Christmas week 2008 they started production in earnest, under their own RINGWOULD label, producing Blanc, Frais and Cendre cheeses from their goats’ milk. Now weekly traders at the Albany Farmers Market they offer samples and an explanation of their farming practices to their customers as they build their business.

Torbay Asparagus & Raspberries

Phillip and Sheelagh Marshall were dairy farmers in UK before coming to Australia in 1970. They started farming in the Torbay region, near Albany, in early 1971 with beef cattle. They planted asparagus in 1972 and were amongst the first commercial growers of asparagus in WA, starting to pick in 1974. They helped establish the WA Asparagus Growers’ Association in 1986, to assist other growers in the region. They have grown a huge number of different vegetables, fruits and wild flowers over the years, whilst still keeping the beef herd. They are also still growing sweetcorn which began in 1978, as well as raspberries, boysenberries, silvanberries and loganberries, which began in 1993. Founding members of the Albany Farmers Market, they bring produce to the market every week during the growing seasons.
